During the 21st United San Antonio Pow Wow conference, we were asked to create an impromptu environmental portrait of Harley Tallchief, a Seneca Nation member and one of the event participants.

The Creative Process

  • Step 1.

    Concept Development

We needed to create a striking and powerful portrait that accurately represented Mr. Tallchief in full Native American bustle.

  • Step 2.

    Pre-Production

Through our research before the event, we discovered that the organizer's mission was to provide native people the opportunity to participate, practice, teach, and exchange tribal traditions among all tribes, to enlighten the non-Indian about the history and culture of America's first inhabitants, and to dispel stereotypes about the American Indian.

    Step 2.

    Pre-Production
  • Step 3.

    Production Day

We only had 10 minutes to create our portrait of Mr. Tallchief, and we realized that our surroundings limited where we could frame the portrait. We had two choices, the inside of a bathroom wall or the sky.

  • Step 4.

    The Results

Carlos Javier created a striking photograph of Mr. Tallcheif and blended available light to match the background, creating textures and drama.
