Chris Grullon, Sean Flanagan, Jeremy Jonas, Ashley Gutermuth and Kim Wadsworth appear in “Operation Heal*arious Comedy Show.”
Operation Heal*arious tours the country to find the funniest military spouses and veterans, and American Legion Alamo Post 2 hosted its San Antonio show. The show was a regional round of the Best Medicine Brigade’s comedy competition, and we filmed it for a three-minute event video. In it, veterans and military spouses explain how comedy has helped them through difficult times.
Ashley Gutermuth, Tango Alpha Lima podcast host and Air Force spouse, says the point is showing everybody how funny the military community is. Air Force veteran Chris Grullon was in Manhattan when the towers went down and tried an open mic two weeks later. He didn’t realize it was a way to cope, it went badly, and it took him about 20 years to get back on stage. Kim Wadsworth, an Air Force veteran, says comedy helped her through a hard time and hopes to do the same for someone else.
The video also touches on the Be the One program, which Ashley calls “so integral to Operation Heal*arious.” For Kim, the primary thing is simple: “you’re not alone. Just reach out.” If you host an event for the people you serve, a recap like this lets those who missed it hear why it mattered.
