Ashley Keen of the SAMMinistries Transitional Living and Learning Center smiles in “Ashley Keen’s Journey of Hope.”

SAMMinistries serves people experiencing homelessness in San Antonio, and its annual gala is one of its biggest fundraisers. For three galas in a row, we’ve produced the gala’s Journeys of Hope client stories, and eight of them are here. Each one introduces guests to someone their gifts will change. Each person speaks for themselves, in their own words, with no narrator.

Before each shoot, Steffi gets to know the people we’ll interview, and several shoots included portraits too. On camera the arc is the same: something was hard, and something changed. Roxy Caldbeck had an eviction notice and a month to move out when a call brought her back in. Roxy remembers that “the first thing she hands me is my key,” and today she counsels kids.

Scott Washington slept for about two days when his housing came through, and near the end he says, “I came a long way.” Ashley Keen finished an eight-week GED program in three weeks while raising two young children at the Transitional Living and Learning Center. Isabel Lara, Libby Rippetoe, Jacob Gutierrez, Anju Kumari and Daniel Apaez round out the set, and shorter cuts ran on SAMMinistries’ social media. Nikisha J. Baker, the nonprofit’s CEO and executive director, says the content “exceeded our expectation every time!”
