Roxy Caldbeck
Roxy Caldbeck had an eviction notice and a month to move out, and she felt she was dragging her kids into homelessness. In this Journeys of Hope video for the SAMMinistries annual gala, she tells how a key, handed to her just in time, meant her family wouldn’t be sleeping on the streets or in her car.
She had first come to SAMMinistries after leaving a domestic violence situation. Facing eviction, she got a call asking her to come in for a second interview. When she walked in, “the first thing she hands me is my key.” Behind the door were new blankets, new sheets and new pots and pans. Roxy calls it “a glimmer of hope.”
Over her two years there, she made friends and kept going to school, to show her kids that you can push through hard times. It took her 10 years to go from an associate’s degree to a master’s in counseling. She now counsels kids, and when she told her story she had been with Communities In Schools for almost seven years. “I love what I do,” she says.
Shorter cuts of her story also ran on SAMMinistries’ social media.
