Building Futures
Building Futures makes the case that San Antonio employers can grow their own talent through registered apprenticeships. This five-minute video for City of San Antonio Workforce Development, made under the Apprenticeship Building America grant, covers registered apprenticeships across all trades and all employers.
Speakers explain how the city’s Workforce Development office helps an employer stand up a program from beginning to end. The office works with each employer to see what it needs, helps with the documentation for the Department of Labor and launches the program once it’s approved. Department of Labor intermediaries help with incentive funding and with building the curriculum.
The video gives two examples. CAST Schools hopes to build pre-apprenticeships that start in high school, and it had already hired two apprentices of its own. The city’s first registered apprenticeship began in the Solid Waste Management Department, with side load operators and CDL drivers in its first cohorts.
One line sums up the message: “Without employer engagement, you only have a workforce training program.” It’s one of 10 videos we produced for the department under the city’s Apprenticeship Building America grant.
