Recruitment and apprenticeship videos

A woman in a TX Fast Track T-shirt smiles in the opening portraits of the “TX Fast Track Program” video.

People sign up when they can picture themselves in the role. These videos let future students, apprentices and partner employers hear from someone who already took the step. See the apprenticeship series we filmed for the City of San Antonio and our alumni stories for NPower.

Our workforce video production page explains how we plan these projects and what they cost. This page groups our examples by what each video asks people to do.

Enroll: hear it from a graduate

NPower’s 13 alumni stories each follow one graduate. Geneva Knott, a Marine Corps veteran, spent about 10 years in law enforcement before moving into tech. Michael Fugett once doubted he was good enough to apply. His message to viewers: “You’re wanted here.”

Start a program: show how it works

For the City of San Antonio, apprentices and employers at JCB, San Antonio ISD and the city’s Solid Waste Management department explain their programs. A seven-minute how-to walks employers through the four phases of becoming a registered apprenticeship program. Building Futures makes the case to San Antonio employers, and Building Our Workforce Through Apprenticeships to employers across the region.

Common questions

Who should be on camera in a recruitment video?

Someone who already took the step. In our NPower alumni videos, one graduate does nearly all the talking. For the City of San Antonio, apprentices appear next to the employers and trainers behind them, and employers speak to their peers. Plan on about one minute of screen time per person, and no more than three people for a 2 to 3 minute video.

Can you film at our training site or workplace?

Yes. We record people where their story happens: at work, at school and in their neighborhood. We shot on a JCB warehouse floor, in a San Antonio ISD classroom and in the cab of a city solid waste truck. The best interview spots are roomy, fairly quiet and away from foot traffic, and we preview each location before the shoot.

How much time do you need from each graduate or employer?

A pre-interview with Steffi about a week before the shoot, 20 to 30 minutes by video call, phone or face to face. On shoot day, budget 45 minutes per interview; most take about 30. We may also film them doing everyday things, like working, and Steffi tells them ahead of time.

Can one shoot give us a full video and short versions for social?

Yes, when the versions are planned before the shoot. NPower's series runs from 14-second spots to three-minute videos, and several alumni videos are told in 30 seconds. We plan every version at the start, from the full video for your website down to a vertical cut for social. A Signature Story includes 1 to 2 supporting videos, and a Story Campaign 3 to 4.

Can the video reach job seekers in Spanish?

Yes. We produce videos in Spanish as well as English and deliver Spanish subtitles. Each person picks the language, and Steffi, our executive producer, leads our Spanish-language interviews. Part of our SAISD Paraprofessional Apprenticeship video is in Spanish, with English subtitles; see Spanish version or subtitles.

Can we pay with a purchase order?

Yes. Government and school clients may use a purchase order in place of a deposit. Otherwise a 50% deposit begins the project, and the balance is due at final delivery. We're SCTRCA-certified as ESBE, HABE, MBE and SBE and registered in SAM.gov; see government video production for procurement details.

How long should a recruitment video be?

Our City of San Antonio apprenticeship series runs from two-minute videos to a seven-minute how-to for employers. NPower's alumni videos run up to three minutes. Social media videos usually run 60 seconds or less, and website videos 3 minutes or less. We settle the length, and any shorter versions, on the discovery call.

Where does the sign-up link or call to action go?

At the end. In an NPower alumni video, the graduate tells it, and the sign-up link comes in the closing seconds. In the City of San Antonio apprenticeship series, the people come first, and the invitation for employers to start their own programs comes after. That closing invitation is where your results, your mission and your plans belong.
