Leadership Pipelines

“I think before the pipeline, I had a very narrow perspective of what leadership was,” says Miriam Martinez, assistant principal at Roosevelt Dual Language Academy. Leadership Pipelines was made for the Edgewood ISD Office of School Leadership in San Antonio. The office works to give students an excellent education by helping teachers feel valued and respected.

Martha Esquivel, principal of Roosevelt Dual Language Academy, says the “unwavering support, guidance and coaching” from district leaders has been a huge part of her success as a first-year Edgewood ISD principal. Miriam met a lot of different leaders and pulled some favorite things from each. Being an administrative intern gave her firsthand knowledge of an assistant principal’s life, so “when I did start the role, I knew exactly what to expect.”

Jessica Kane, a fellow at Roosevelt Dual Language Academy, says she’s learning on the job every day and thinks one of the most important things is to build relationships. She started teaching in 2018 and grew as a teacher until somebody in Edgewood suggested leadership; at the time, she was an admin fellow. Miriam says parents now come back and see her as an administrator they can trust, “because they know me from when I taught their children.”

Martha had been an assistant principal for nine years. She knows the value of sponsoring others in the pipeline, and says she plays a huge role in making sure Miriam and Jessica are ready on “the EISD leader bench.”
