Edgewood ISD Student profile

Emily Medrano

Emily Medrano likes seeing people succeed, “or more specifically, women,” who may have a harder time achieving things just because they’re women. That’s why being a leader among her peers matters to her. This short profile for Edgewood ISD introduces Emily, then a freshman at Kennedy High School.

Basketball taught her time management. After tournaments early in the season, she had lots of schoolwork to do, and as an athlete she knew she was “held to a higher standard.” She learned to get her work done better and faster. She likes to have a plan, so when things go differently, she knows how to fix it.

Her favorite thing about Edgewood ISD is the coaches, who push students to be their best selves. Coaches and teachers put in a lot of time, she says, like offering open gyms for basketball after school, even though “they have their own life.” Her favorite classes are probably athletics, because she likes to work out, journalism and English, because she just enjoys reading.

She chose Edgewood for its teachers and coaches and the effort they put into helping her become a better student, and she’s grateful for the opportunities. Being elected a Leader of the P.A.C., she says, is about helping “hear the voices of Edgewood Kennedy.”
